What is machine translation?
Machine translation is an automated translation from one language to another. Machine translation has both advantages and disadvantages, and the suitability of this type of translation depends on the individual case. The big advantage is that large amounts of text can be translated very quickly, and in some cases, the savings can be significant. Another advantage of machine translation is that the terminology is stored and linked to you as a customer, so that your translations become more consistent. Despite the advantages, there are also many occasions when machine translation is not appropriate. Diction's project managers will be happy to make such an assessment when preparing your quote - of course, at no cost to you.
Is machine translation the obvious choice for you?
To determine if machine translation is the right solution for you, a professional assessment is needed, and we can help you with that. Generally, machine translation is most often used for simple texts, such as internal-use email messages, simple product descriptions for online stores, SEO texts, or presentations. It can also be used for more complex texts if you only need to get a general sense of the content's meaning.
When should you use machine translation?
In this section, we try to describe when it is meaningful to use machine translation rather than human translation.
We recommend machine translation with subsequent human proofreading for the following types of texts:
- user reviews
- customer chat messages
- user forums
- email messages
- internal communication
- manuals to be translated only for internal use
- social media updates
- frequently asked questions (FAQs)
- knowledge bases with large amounts of text
- simple website texts, product descriptions, instructions
- blog posts.
In the following cases, we recommend human translation:
- legal texts
- financial texts
- technical texts
- advertising texts for print
- advertising/newsletters.
The above examples are only for guidance.
Machine translations are reviewed by a proofreader
As a quality assurance measure, machine translations from Diction are always proofread. The proofreader edits, corrects, and implements all parts of the translation. At a minimum, all our proofreaders have a master's degree, and they only review texts in their own native language.
What does machine translation cost?
At Diction, we try to offer the best possible translation prices in the simplest way possible, and therefore we have a fixed price for each word translated. The price for our machine translation is from €0.085 per word. However, the price may vary depending on language combination, file format, and deadline. If you have a text in an editable format (e.g., Word), you can multiply the word count by the price per word to make a price estimate.
Your own translation memory, discounts on repetitions, and integration with your system
Using the translation memory in our system, we can store your previous translations for you. This gives you fast and accurate translations, and you don't have to pay twice for the same translation. You will always own your own translation memory, and your data will be stored in our system only as long as you wish. This flexibility allows you to change translation providers if you so desire. In many cases, it is also possible to create a file that can be integrated with CRM systems, websites, codes, or similar, as texts would otherwise need to be inserted manually. We always support our customers in their internal translation workflow, i.e., the customer's specific request for how the translations
